Program Goal: This is a 1 hour on-line monograph course designed for home study by healthcare clinicians. Specifically, it meets the 1 hour HIV/AIDS continuing education for Florida health professionals that is required prior to their initial re-licensure. Information regarding the prevention, transmission, control, diagnosis and treatment of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is provided. Other topics discussed include standard precautions, care of persons living with AIDS, workplace issues and legal aspects for Florida health care professionals.

Statement of Need: HIV infection and AIDS continues to be a pressing health issue in the U.S. and globally. The need for improvement in prevention is underscored by the rising numbers of diagnoses. Therapeutic options for suppressing viral replication and altering immune system deterioration have dramatically changed the prognosis and course of this once predictably fatal condition. These advances are accompanied by management issues that are very dynamic and constantly evolving as therapies, new and developed, are evaluated for safe and efficacious use in a very diverse population; many with multiple comorbid conditions. It is important that healthcare professionals maintain an updated knowledge of the disease process and basic clinical management of HIV infection and AIDS to help improve outcomes for affected individuals that interface with the professional's functions in healthcare.

Educational Objectives: Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the epidemiology, immunopathogenesis, and diagnosis of AIDS.
  2. Identify methods of HIV transmission and reduction/prevention techniques.
  3. Explain the current clinical management of HIV/AIDS.
  4. Discuss current medications and therapeutic strategies used to treat HIV/AIDS.
  5. Describe laboratory tests utilized in the diagnosis and management of HIV/AIDS.
  6. Outline Florida Law as it relates to HIV testing.
